→ What can a museum be today?
Carmen Thyssen is one of Europe’s most prominent art collectors and patrons, known for her role in preserving and sharing an extensive collection spanning centuries of art history.
Building on this legacy, the upcoming Museu Carmen Thyssen Barcelona aims to connect historical heritage with contemporary perspectives, making art accessible to wider audiences.
We were commissioned to develop the museum’s brand strategy and visual identity, starting with a simple question: what can a museum be today? We imagined the museum as a space of possibility: one that preserves the past while opening it up to new interpretations. An institution that invites people to question, discover and reconsider their relationship with culture.

The visual identity is built around a simple geometric element: the square. Placed over an image, it conceals part of what lies beneath, creating a dialogue between visibility and absence. This simple gesture sparks curiosity, inviting viewers to question what they see and imagine what remains hidden.
More than a graphic device, the square becomes a visual expression of the museum’s philosophy: an invitation to look beyond the obvious, explore different perspectives and discover new meanings.
T.3

Curiosity is the thread that connects Carmen Thyssen’s legacy to something beyond the collection itself: a way of looking, an instinct to seek, connect and remain open to discovery. The museum carries this perspective forward, inviting both the art world and the wider public to question, explore and build new relationships with culture, positioning it as a space for exploration rather than a place of declaration.
T.4
With construction of the museum’s future home yet to begin, the Museu Carmen Thyssen Barcelona is expected to open its doors in approximately three years. Until then, the visual identity offers a first glimpse into the character of an institution that is still taking shape.
